Accolade Hospice has long recognized the value of a chore taken off the “to-do” list, a hand held gently “just because,” a loving smile, or a few quiet moments for a very busy caregiver. Mowing the lawn or stocking a cupboard with supper ingredients can be precious gifts indeed. And these are precisely the kind of gifts provided by Accolade Hospice volunteers to help patients or their families feel that life is “normal” – if only briefly. For Accolade Hospice patients, the Accolade volunteer may be the last “new best friend” that he/she will get to know, and the volunteer often remains close to the surviving family members for many years.
There are as many jobs for Accolade Hospice volunteers as there are interests. If patient care isn’t your cup of tea, there are several equally important jobs both in and out of the Accolade Hospice office, such as filing, running errands, stocking supplies, etc.
Because Accolade Hospice takes its responsibility to patients and families very seriously, background checks, drug testing, and references are required. Attendance is also mandatory at a volunteer training class that addresses many end-of-life and bereavement issues. We want you to feel confident in your abilities as a hospice volunteer, and we want our patients and families to feel confident about welcoming you into their home.
To become an Accolade Hospice volunteer, please call your local Accolade Hospice office and say “I’d like to be a hospice volunteer.” We are waiting to hear from you!
